Dundee, the coastal trail’s southern launch pad, with its famous road and rail bridges, slopes up to the law an extinct 571ft volcanic plug with breathtaking views. Downtown it’s a shoppers paradise and it won’t take you long to spot the Dundee Cake. Standing alongside Captain Scott’s famous Antarctic Research Ship Discovery, now in her new birth at Discovery Quay, Riverside Drive, is Discovery Point, Scotland’s newest Visitor centre.

Victoria Dock is home to the Frigate Unicorn, the oldest British warship afloat. The city’s art treasures and museums, including notable collections of Scottish paintings, are in the McManus Galleries. Search for planets and stars at The Mills Observatory, which is the only public observatory in Britain with a resident astronomer. There is an active nightlife but for something different try a Jacobite banquet in a 16th century restaurant. Folk singing is a feature in the pubs at Broughty Ferry where Broughty castle with its local history gallery stands guard over the Tay.
