Ambleside, in the heart of the English Lake District in Cumbria, is situated just half a mile from the northern end of beautiful Lake Windermere, the longest lake in England. Ambleside“s distinctive green slate buildings merge harmoniously with the green of the fields and fells all around.

To the north is the spectacular Fairfield Horseshoe which rises to nearly 3000 feet to dominate the skyline; by complete contrast to the west is gentle Loughrigg Fell, beneath which the River Rothay meanders from Grasmere to Ambleside and into Lake Windermere.

To the east is steep and stately Wansfell Pike, where on a clear day you can see across the fell tops to the sea or across to the Pennines.

Ambleside was originally settled just over 2000 years ago by the Romans at Galava, between Waterhead and Ambleside, where the remains of their two forts can be found. Life was so good, that they stayed for three centuries!

Invaders struck again when the Vikings arrived around 900 AD and it was probably they who named the town Amelsate and eventually Ambleside.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Ambleside thrived with wool to trade and water power so readily available; the little market centre prospered well on cloth, corn, paper and bobbin mills.

Victorian prosperity brought a remarkable boom to the town of Ambleside, as wealthy industrialists built large country houses in the area, especially following the arrival of the railway to nearby Windermere in 1847.

Since then, tourists have found Ambleside to be a favourite destination, enjoying the warmth and friendliness of the local people, where individuality has created many unique and fascinating features to interest all tastes.

One of the great things about Ambleside is that you won“t find a superstore for miles; instead, Ambleside offers good, old-fashioned service and courtesy. There is a large variety of shops, both traditional, family-run businesses and the latest in retailing in the new Market Cross centre, plus a wide choice of restaurants and coffee houses, cinema, bike hire and horse-drawn carriage that operates between the lake and village centre throughout the season.
