Appleby is set in a great loop of the River Eden, protected on the north side by a Norman Castle. One of the most picturesque market towns in Northern England, it was originally the County Town of Westmorland. Sheltered from the east by the High Pennines and from the west by the Lakeland Fells, Appleby enjoys a milder and drier climate than most of Cumbria, making it an ideal base for exploring the countryside or simply relaxing in the tranquil surroundings of the town.
The main street of Broughgate lies at the heart of the town’s heritage. At either end of the thoroughfare, High and Low Crosses mark the original boundaries of the market. The castle, restored in the seventeenth century by Lady Anne Clifford, Countess of Pembroke and High Sheriffess of Westmorland, has defended the town since Norman times. St Anne’s Hospital, a peaceful courtyard of almshouses originally built for thirteen poor widows of the castle estate, is still maintained by the trust endowed by Lady Anne’s.
St Lawrence’s Church set between the Cloisters and the cricket field, was also restored by Lady Anne and it is here that her tomb can be seen. One of the oldest surviving church organs in the country is in regular use here. Above the town centre is the Grammar School – attended by the brothers of the American President George Washington attended – and the settle-Carlisle Railway. Appleby was granted a Charter in 1174. Today, it is a thriving town with many recreational facilities. Set against the backdrop of the northern Pennines is one of the most impressive golf courses in the North. In the centre of the town there are squash courts, a swimming pool, cricket pitch, bowling green and playgrounds. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are opportunities for walking, climbing, riding, fishing, bird watching and clay shooting.
Appleby is on or close to the Cumbrian Cycle way, the Westmorland Way, the Pennine Way and the coast-to-coast walk. For more relaxed evening, plays and concerts including the Appleby Jazz Festival are regularly featured. In June each year, the three hundred year old Horse Fair is a colourful attraction. People from all over the country converge on the town for a week-long holiday to buy and sell horses and to compete in trotting races. Appleby is a small, friendly, historic town where the visitor will find a warm welcome along with a variety of shops offering local crafts and specialities.
