In beautiful wooded and undulating countryside on the edge of the North Pennines, Brampton sits peacefully in the Irthing Valley, two miles from Hadrian’s Wall. To the south is Eden Valley and the Lake District National Park, to the north lie the hills of the Scottish Borders and the Border Forest Park, while to the west the River Eden flows into Solway Firth.

Almost 2000 years ago the Romans built a fort here and the Angels established a settlement here in the 7th century. King Henry III granted a Market Charter in 1252. The moot Hall stands in the centre of the Market Place at the eastern end of the main shopping street where it is surrounded by market stalls for the bustling weekly Wednesday market.

During the Jacobite Rebellion, Prince Charles Edward Stuart and his army of rebel Highlanders stayed in the town whilst laying siege to Carlisle in 1745. The young pretender entered the City on November 17 before heading south to reclaim the crown. Off the Market Place is the house where Bonnie Prince Charlie himself stayed. Only one month later he was forced to retreat back to Scotland. Six of the Prince’s followers were eventually hanged in the following year at the Capon tree on the outskirts of the town.

Its not just history and heritage on offer: You can spend a week in Brampton and not get in a car once! There is a variety of walks that vary in length from 2 to 7 miles through local woods, farmland and along the local rivers. Talkin Tarn has an easy flat walk around its edge, and has Rowing boats for hire along with windsurfing and boating facilities. Brampton is on the Cumbria Cycle Way and is an ideal base for safe and enjoyable cycling. Mountain bikes can be hired from Talkin Tarn. The New Mills trout Farm is an ideal place for trout fishing and is well stocked with Rainbow Trout to feed, catch or buy. Fishing is also available at Talkin Tarn.

The Brampton Area offers a number of wildlife habitats. There are the unspoilt fells and ancient woodlands of the King’s Forest of Geltsdale, parts of which are an RSPB reserve. There are several outstanding wildlife areas in the upper Irthing Valley and the Woodland Trust manages woodland in the area, including Milton Rigg Wood.

The 12th century Augustinian Priory at nearby Lanercost is en-route to Hadrians wall. The priory is set in grounds by the River Irthing. Sections of it are well preserved, whilst others show the effect of hundreds of years of border warfare. Services are still held in the nave of the Priory Church, which has been converted into what must be one of the most beautiful Parish churches in the country.

All the components of the Roman frontier system can be found just to the north of Brampton. Birdoswald Roman Fort is located in one of the most picturesque settings along the whole of Hadrian’s Wall, overlooking the Irthing Gorge. Archaeological excavations have revealed much about life under the Romans and the new visitor centre brings this fascinating period to life.
