The town of Broughton-in-Furness lies at the top of the Estuary of the River Duddon. Here the fells and sea combine to create some of the most spectacular scenery locations in the North West of England. Located in a conservation area within the Lake District National Park, it serves a large rural community where farming is still the mainstay of the economy. It is pleasantly quiet and unspoilt, making it an outstanding walking centre with fascinating attractions to explore near by.
Broughton is surrounded by spectacular scenery with world-class views and walking. There are many interesting walks with a starting point in the town centre, and then to the north is the lush wooded Duddon Valley and Coniston water. To the south is the serene Duddon Estuary, a tranquil haven renowned for its fantastic sunsets and Duddon Mosses, a Site of Special Scientific Interest internationally recognised for its wildlife, now being restored with public access by English Nature. To the west lies the stunning lakes and fells and the varied coastline of the Western Lake District, with the gentle scenery of the Furness Peninsulas just to the south and to the east is the Central Lake District including Lake Windermere and Grasmere.
Although Broughton is ideal for walking there are many other activities to do. Quiet local roads and mountain biking tracks make it an ideal place for cyclists and horse riders. There are two tennis courts and for golfers there is two golf courses very close to Broughton. Some of the fascinating attractions near Broughton include Folk and RAF Museums at Millom, Steam Yacht Gondola, Coniston Launch and Brantwood (home of John Ruskin) at Coniston. In the Western Lake District are Muncaster Castle & an Owl Sanctuary along with the Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Miniature Railway. The Lake District Peninsulas also offer the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway, South Lakes Wild Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness, Holker Hall and Gardens and The Lakeland Motor Museum. Barrow-in-Furness is home to Furness Abbey and Dock Museum and with festivals in nearby Ulverston there is plenty to do for everyone.
