Cleator Moor is situated four miles from Whitehaven and three miles from Ennerdale and lies in delightful countryside. It grew up in the 19th century to become a busy haematite ore mining town although there is little evidence of this today. Between the town and the small village of Cleator is St. Mary’s Roman Cathlic Church, designed by Pugin, which has a grotto similar to the one at Lourdes in France. The grotto was built by local people during the depression of the 1930s. Each September there is a pilgrimage to the grotto which attracts visitors from all over the country.
Interesting features to be seen in the Market Square are the Victorian Awning around the Co-op store and the memorial to the iron ore and coal miners by the well known local artist Conrad Atkinson. An open air market is held in the square every Friday and half day closing is on a Wednesday. A popular beauty spot on the River Ehen is Wath Bridge, known locally as “Hen Beck”. This is an ideal picnic spot where children can bathe safely. There is an indoor bowls centre with bar, social area and facilities for the disabled.
