Egremont is a small market town that dates back to Norman times. At the bottom of the wide main street you can see the ruined Norman castle standing on a natural hill overlooking the River Eden. The gatehouse and curtain wall survive from the original building and the herringbone pattern of the stonework is typical of the period. Lowes Court gallery on the Main Street combines an interesting gallery with ever changing exhibitions , local craft shop and Tourist Information centre.
Once a busy Haematite iron ore mining area, there is now only one mine - Florence Mine - still working. Specimens of ore are on sale and underground visits can be made by prior arrangement. Every year on the 3rd Saturday in September the town celebrates the Crab Fair, which was first held in 1267. The Lord of Egremont started a tradition of giving away crab apples. The carts still make this generous gesture. Other amusements include the celebrated World Gurning Championships where contestants pull faces through a horse collar, a pipe smoking event and the singing of hunting songs. Friday is Market Day and Wednesday is half day closing.
