Kendal has a rich and varied history and its motto “wool is my bread” gives a clue as to the woollen industry that has important to the town for centuries. Everywhere you go you will find cobbled yards to explore. From the ruins of the 13th century Kendal Castle set on a hill above the town, there are wonderful views across Kendal and beyond. The castle was once home to the Parr family, of which Katherine, the sixth wife of Henry VIII, was the most famous member.

In Kirkland, the oldest part of Kendal is the Parish Church, which is one of the widest in the country with five aisles. You can follow the riverside path, town trails or enjoy some lovely walks in areas surrounding Kendal such as Scout Scar. Every Wednesday and Saturday, the town is buzzing with locals and visitors milling around the traditional outdoor market. There’s and indoor market Monday to Saturday and for produce fresh from the farm, Kendal’s special Farmers Markets are held on the last Friday of every month. Kendal has all the high street names you would expect together with many speciality shops, a factory outlet centre and shopping centres. Local specialities include the famous Kendal Mintcake, “Webbs Wonderful” lettuce and Kendal snuff!

A lively programme of events takes place all year round in Kendal. The Brewery Arts Centre has a cinema, theatre, exhibitions and a varied music programme. Annual events in and around the town include the Medieval Market in May, the Kirkland Festival in June, The Westmorland Country Show (a traditional agricultural show) and The Torchlight Carnival in September. The Mountain Film Festival and the Christmas Lights switch-On complete with Cairngorm Reindeer both take place in November. During the summer, you can catch the Kendal Kipper, a 1949 Leyland Tiger bus to take you around the town.
