Keswick on Derwentwater, a small town built round its Market Place and Moot Hall, is a lively mix of shops, still with the personal touch, a long history and literary tradition and lots of visitor attractions both indoor and out. Recent National awards from “Britain in Bloom” and the “Tidy Britain group” speak for the town’s attractive appearance. Blessed with two large recreational parks close to the centre as well, and with only a short stroll to the lakeside, Keswick is an ideal centre for family holidays.
This is definitely the country for the lively person of any age. On land, water and in the air there are activities at all levels of effort and ability in which you can be involved. Derwentwater “Queen of the English Lakes” is also the busiest because of its location, but even so, retains its peaceful character as do each of its neighbours in their own dramatic settings.
You’ll also enjoy walks along the lakeside and forest paths or up onto the multitude of higher routes on the fells. Whatever your choice, you can’t fail to be impressed by the changing scenes. Among all this activity there’s always time to tour round the quiet backroads of the Northern Lakes where even today much of the traditional life in hamlets and villages continues.
This area is one of the most scenically beautiful in Britain. Majestic and high mountains such as Skiddaw, Scafell and Helvellyn dominate the panorama as seen from smaller fells and valleys. There, amid the green pastures and stone walls of the farming landscape are the jewels of the Lake District – Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite Lake, Buttermere, Crummock Water and Thirlmere, changing mood and appearance dramatically according to weather and season. There’s an amazing variety of scenery to be found and easily explored in this compact area, only twenty miles across.
