The delightful market town of Kirkby Lonsdale has some lovely riverside and country walks and is set in the lush Lune Valley between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks. The view of the river from St. Mary’s churchyard prompted Victorian artist John Ruskin to describe the landscape as some of the loveliest in the country. It became known as Ruskin’s View and inspired a famous painting by Turner. The beautiful 12th century Devils Bridge is a scheduled ancient monument and spans the river with three graceful ribbed arches.

In the 13th century the town was granted a charted for fairs and still holds a popular Thursday market. It has been a national winner in Britain in Bloom, has an excellent range of speciality shops, attractive 17th and 18th century inns and buildings and a fine Norman church. There are golf courses, a bowling green and tennis courts, plus a variety of events.

Nearby attractions include, Ruskin’s View from St. Mary’s churchyard and the lovely walk along “The Brow” adjacent to the viewpoint. The famous Devils Bridge and riverside walk from the bridge to the town centre where there are over 60 speciality shops. Kirkby Lonsdale Victorian Fair in September offers the opportunity to step back to the days gone by. The main streets are totally transformed with stalls and entertainment in the true Victorian style with local dressing in period costumes.
