Milnthorpe is an ancient place. Its origin and development owe much to the presence of the River Bela and the nearby Kent Estuary, providing both transport and power. The "township" of the mills had its hey day between 1740 - 1840, the period to which the village layout and many of its main buildings belong. At this time raw materials were brought directly by boat to the mouth of the River Bela at Sandside. The mills produced paper, sacking, cotton, corn, flax and twine. With the building of the turnpike road between Kendal and Lancaster, Milnthorpe became an important staging post. The traditions of hospitality set then continue to the present day.
The village is a living, thriving and socially mixed community. It has a variety of small industries and an area of vibrant commercial activity focused around the market square. The centre of the village has been designated a conservation area and many interesting buildings remain from earlier times, though often used for different purposes. On Fridays the lively bustling market dating from 1334, where a wide range of produce can be purchased, transforms the village. Parking is easy and local shops, banks, pubs and eating-places are well patronised. For those with a young family there is a well-equipped playground on the nearby playing field.
Milnthorpe enjoys surroundings rarely surpassed in beauty and variety by the more famous tourist spots of the Lake District. The ever-changing wide expanse of the Kent Estuary with its backdrop of the Lakeland Fells provides a habitat for bird life and a favourite haunt for anglers. Facing the River Bela is the 18th century landscaped deer park of Dallam Tower, a famous Queen Anne style house. A network of footpaths provides ready access to the well wooded, rolling countryside adjoining the village. Whether your interests are walking, fishing, bird watching or other tourist attractions, there is plenty to do in and around Milnthorpe. The Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks and the Arnside / Silverdale Area of outstanding Natural Beauty are easily accessible. The towns of Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Grange-over-Sands, Lancaster and Morecambe are all within easy reach.
