Orton was a town of such importance that Edward 1st granted it a charter to hold a market on every Wednesday. Later Cromwell granted a license to hold an annual fair during Whitsun week. Today no markets or fairs are held in Orton although the Market Hall survives and is used for many village functions.
Many of the buildings in and around the village are between two and three hundred years old. All saints Church stands proudly at the head of the village. Parts built in the 16th century still survive and despite suffering badly during the reformation, the church is now in good order due to considerable restoration in the 19th century. The earliest school in Orton was founded in 1730. Several buildings around the village have been used for the school; the present one being built in 1963. The school serves its need for a widespread country parish. At the south or “Town End” of the village stands Orton Hall, a fine Jacobean mansion house dating form 1662. The hall, standing in its grounds, is now a grade II listed building being of fine architectural importance. The hall has been carefully converted into self-catering apartments.
Orton is limestone country. This is a land of limestone pavements, unique feature formed by glaciers smoothing off the bedrock. The gaps in the rock provide habitats for rare plants and animals. The pavements, a feature of the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria, are a fragile part of our countryside and are now protected by law against damage or removal. In limestone country there is a rapid rise and fall of streams and rivers during and after rainfall. The rivers Eden and Lune, both close to Orton, are exceptional fishing rivers with Salmon in both. Both walker and cyclist will enjoy Orton as a centre for following their pastimes. The popular fells of the Lake District are close by; however the quieter lanes, footpaths and bridleways of the North Pennines and Howgills are all with in easy reach of Orton.
