Benington, in the west of the district, arranged picturesquely around a perfect green with a duck pond, is regarded as one of the most attractive villages in the county.
Its reputation has grown in part from the magnificent gardens of the Georgian house, Benington Lordship, as well as the timbered cottages clustered around the green.
Next to the fine medieval church lies the Lordship. Its grounds, which are open to the public, contain the ruins of a Norman castle. Its keep was destroyed by King John“s henchmen in 1212, but its spirit lives on thanks to a 19th century landscape gardener, Pulham of Broxbourne. He incorporated the old flint walls into a mock Norman gatehouse, complete with portcullis.
