Watling Street (A5) has dominated the village of Hockliffe since Roman times.
The Limes and the Old White Horse, now private houses, are the sole survivors of 12 inns that catered for stagecoach travellers in the early 19th century, and Hockliffe House contains a small remnant of the medieval hospital of St John which was built in the 13th century for the destitute poor.
In more recent times, author Arnold Bennett completed Anna of the Five Towns and wrote his only detective story Teresa of Watling Street while living at Trinity Hall Farm beside the Watling Street.
The oldest part of Hockliffe lies to the west of the main road around the 14th century parish church.
Hockliffe lies on the busy A5 between Dunstable and Milton Keynes, hosting a varied range of services for travellers and passers by.
