Over a hundred and fifty years ago, Hunstanton was the brainchild of Henry Styleman le Strange of Hunstanton Hall. In 1843, he issued a prospectus for the “Sea Bathing Resort of Hunstanton”, planned according to his own design. The new resort was to be built, in response to the increasing popularity of the seaside holiday, on an undeveloped part of his estate south of the village used only for grazing sheep. Rumour has it that Henry’s choice of site was influenced by his concerns that a sudden influx of sea-bathing visitors could spoil the character of his own village.

In 1846, the first building appeared – now called the Golden Lion, its original name was the New Inn, also known locally as “le Strange’s Folly”, as it remained alone in the field for several years until Henry could interest developers in his idea’s. However, in 1862 the arrival of the railway set the seal on Hunstanton’s success. Sadly, Henry died the same year, but under the patronage of his son, Hamon le Strange, Hunstanton surpassed even Henry’s expectations to become the thriving holiday resort it is today.

Following the closure of the railway in 1969, Hunstanton underwent a series of changes during the 70’s including the loss of the pier during a storm. The next decade saw the re-opening of the Princess Theatre, now managed by the local Borough Council, as well as the establishment of the colourful Oasis Leisure Centre and Fascinating sea Life Centre.

Today Hunstanton is thriving. Visitor’s return time and time again to enjoy its distinctive striped cliffs, a haven for fossil-hunters, as well as the opportunity to watch the sunsets over the sea - Hunstanton is unique in being the only west-facing resort on the east coast. The peaceful Esplanade Gardens overlook the sea, and the town centre and seafront are easy accessible to disabled visitors.

The town is excellently situated for easy access to nearby attractions such as Norfolk Lavender, Park Farm and Sandringham, as well as the unspoilt Norfolk coast. With a variety of attractions, safe and clean sandy beaches and a wide range of accommodation, Hunstanton offers a real seaside holiday with all the trimmings.
