The village is one of the highest in Bedfordshire, 600 ft up on the Downs.
This had a practical purpose during the Napoleonic Wars when it was part of a national signalling system set up to receive signals from Lilley in Hertfordshire to give prior warning of the expected invasion attempt.
At Church End, amongst a cluster of old houses, can be found the parish church with its two Norman doorways and a south door around which are carved characters from the fables of Babrius, a third century Greek writer.
