Lincoln is one of England’s most beautiful cathedral cities, with 2,000 years of history for visitors to discover and enjoy. Its Roman remains include Newport Arch, the 3rd century gateway to the Roman city, and now the oldest Roman archway still used by traffic.
In Viking times, Lincoln was an important trading centre. Its busy mint produced Viking coins, which can still be seen in the Usher Gallery. When William the Conqueror’s Norman invasion reached Lincoln, they set about building a magnificent Cathedral and an impenetrable castle. Buildings which endured reconstruction and change in the subsequent centuries, not least because the cathedral suffered from both earthquake and fire, but they still provide Lincoln’s two most impressive heritage attractions today. In medieval times Lincoln’s prosperity was based on the wool trade, and fine examples of the rich merchant’s black and white timbered houses still survive today.
The 18th and 19th centuries brought industrial innovation and change, as Lincoln became a major engineering and agricultural centre. Though to the present day, where the historic and modern cities exist harmoniously, to provide a centre of great interest and beauty for its citizens and visitors. If you like to shop, then there is something in Lincoln to suit every taste and budget. The modern city offers all of the major departmental stores and multiples in pleasant pedestrianised surroundings; and musicians and pavement artists add to the squares.
A principal attraction is the Waterside Centre which contains 40 units in an airy and attractive setting alongside the River Witham. Also in the downhill area, there is a daily indoor and outdoor market where you can pick up a bargain, or sample the vegetables and flowers which come from the surrounding Lincolnshire countryside. As you climb the hill between the lower and upper cities, you encounter lots of specialist shops, trading in antiques, crafts and other collectables. This old worlde is maintained within the historic core, where Bailgate is a particularly popular shopping street with gift shops, boutiques and specialist outlets catering for the discerning locals and tourists alike.
The city has many fine parks, and open spaces, including The Lawn, The Arbouretum and Boutham Park. Hartsholme Country Park is a beautiful 90 acre park with mature trees, lawns and lake. Plus a visitor centre, caravan park, playground, café and picnic areas. Adjacent to Hartsholme is Swanholme Lakes, a beautiful unspoilt area with extensive lakes and walks highlighting some very rare species of flora, fauna and wildlife.
Lincoln is a busy entertainment centre with plenty going on in leisure, sport and the arts. The Theatre Royal is a picturesque Victorian theatre with a mixture of pre-West End plays, touring shows and amateur productions, whilst the Ritz Cinema offers all the latest movie releases. The Lawn, the Castle and the Cathedral all offer excellent opportunities for music and other entertainment, and there is a busy local arts scene, with a comprehensive range of concerts, exhibitions, events and historical re-enactments going on throughout the year.
If you like eating out there is something to suit every taste and budget. There are good quality restaurants, many of them housed in historical properties, and most of the local pubs offer food, as well as traditional beers and friendly hospitality. The city also has a couple of nightclubs for the energetic or young at heart.
On the sporting scene Lincoln City Football Club and Lincolnshire Cricket club offer good spectator sports, whilst the ten pin bowling club, golf clubs, leisure centres and parks offer the chance to participate in most leisure and sporting activities. A lot of top class sporting action is also hosted in Lincoln, including city centre cycle races and similar events. Lincoln’s waterways and Brayford Pool host boat trips and fishing, and you can go yachting, water ski or jet ski at watersports complexes in the south of the city.
