The ancient city of Peterborough was transformed during the Railway Age and became the hub of a vast railway network. It was situated on a main line route and was also central to half a dozen counties – a position that makes it both attractive and convenient today. And for convenience it would be hard to beat the award-winning Queensgate Centre at the heart of the City. It’s wide uncrowded malls, controlled temperature system and great variety makes shopping even more pleasure than usual.

Also quite close is a centre of another kind, Peterborough Cathedral. Pass through the medieval arch for a first sight of the magnificent West Front. Inside admire the unique Thirteenth Century painted wooden ceiling the exquisite fan vaulting at the east end. Originally a Benedictine Abbey, this magnificent structure became a Cathedral by Royal Charter in 1541. Henry VIII whose first wife, Katharine of Aragon, is buried here, as was, for awhile, Mary Queen of Scots.

At nearby Flag Fen peaty mud has preserved ancient timbers for 3,000 years. This Bronze Age farm in an important archeological site and also makes for a fascinating visit. See what Bronze Age house looked like, walk on Roman Road, examine ancient jewellery and weapons and, possibly best of all, inspect living examples of primitive domestic animals.

Peterborough also caters for up-to-date concerns. A range of restaurants offers everything from ethnic to the traditional. The Key Theatre is a pleasant spot for a leisurely drink and lunchtime snack down by the river – and a chance to check out the Theatre’s latest production. For a show of another kind, watch the Panther son the speedway track or Peterborough United on the football field. If you feel like some action yourself, the golf clubs are always welcoming and for the whole family, ten-pin bowling makes an energetic option.

For the children, a visit to the new Indoor Activity Centre is always a great success only by the excitement of travelling seven and half miles on steam train on the Nene Valley Railway. For something a little more peaceful there’s always Nene Park for a leisurely walk or if you fancy a bit of windsurfing or dinghy surfing there’s always the Watersports Centre.

Close by is Europe’s largest man-made lake in England’s smallest county – Rutland Water. A pleasant place to spend a sunny afternoon. Hire a boat or a cycle, or enjoy a stroll round the tranquil shoreline. Further afield, there’s all the fun of the sea-side at Norfolk’s coastal resorts and just a short detour brings you to the cobbled streets of historic King’s Lynn where they made “Martin Chuzzlewit”. If you want to be really grand, choose the right time of the year and inspect the interior of Sandringham.
