Wymondham

Pronounced “Wind-um” to confuse the visitor, Wymondham is at last enjoying the relief provided by the new A11 bypass, and the benefit of a recent town centre improvement scheme. Wymondham still provides a centre for the local farming community. Its Friday market reminds the visitor that an active, independent town life continues to thrive, despite the influence of its large city neighbour, Norwich.

Leisure activities play and increasingly important part in town life, and a new leisure centre, playing fields, and many active sports and social clubs and societies provide the framework for a thriving community. A swimming pool is planned, a large open space is being developed for recreational use, riverside walks have been opened up and a local nature reserve is being designated.

Although Wymondham has changed with the times, it has maintained its market town atmosphere. With an interesting history, some outstanding buildings, a good range of shops, pubs, cafes and attractive places to take a stroll in town or country surroundings, Wymondham will reward the visitor who chooses to spend a little time getting to know it.

Some of the interesting places to visit in Wymondham are, Becket’s Chapel, which was founded in 1179 by William d’Albini, son of the founder of the Abbey. It is now the town’s library. The Market Cross was built in 1616 and cost £25 and 7 shillings: the repairs and restoration in 1989 nearly £95,000. It is now the town’s Tourist information Point. The Abbey, if the Market Cross has become Wymondham’s trademark, the Abbey will always be its crowning glory. The River Tiffey links a series of attractive open spaces – the Lizard, Tolls Meadow, Becketswell – into a “green corridor” through the town. A short stroll past the Abbey leads to the Tiffey Valley Walk where riverside footpaths give fine views of typical Norfolk valley landscapes. These are just a few of the many interesting places to visit in Wymondham.
