There’s much more to exhibits in glass cases to look at in Clydesdale’s museums. Biggar alone has four, including the Moat Park Museum which traces the history of Clydesdale. Wanlockhead is not only the highest village in Scotland but also home to the Scottish Museum of Lead Mining where you can take a guided tour down a Lead Mine.
You’ll find eight golf course in Clydesdale, at Lanark, Mouse Valley, Carnwath, Biggar, Carluke, Lesmahagow, Rigside and Leadhills. If you like the wind in your hair then Clydesdale provides as much fresh air as you can take in hang- gliding from Tinto Hill, hot air ballooning from Biggar, white water canoeing on the Clyde and horse riding at Lanark Moor Country Park. For those seeking more tranquil pursuits, the Rivers Clyde and Mouse offer trout fishing and the Falls of Clyde and Nethan Valley nature reserves are open to the public to discover protected wildlife.
In times past, weary travellers would perhaps spend the night at a coaching Inn. Its good to know that some things never change. You can choose from various kinds of accommodation in Clydesdale, including historical inns, country house hotels and farmhouse bed and breakfasts. The food is equally varied. Award winning hotels and country pubs offer a taste of traditional Scottish food, succulent home grown Clyde Valley beef and lamb, local tomatoes and garden produce, white European and eastern cuisine can be found at a number of fine restaurants throughout the District.
Whatever form of transport brings you to Clydesdale, after awhile you’ll want to see the scenery up close. Take a walk up Tinto Hill to discover Scotland’s largest Neolithic cairn or climb Clutter Fell. Riverside walks follow the Clyde, Nethan, Douglas Water and Mouse rivers.
