Glasgow is a dynamic and energetic city. Its rich and varied historical background is reflected in the contrasting architecture, thus making the city an intriguing one to explore. The large number of parks and gardens (over 70) are ideal for sporting and outdoor activities, and the lively nightlife with a variety of theatrical and musical offerings including jazz, classical and contemporary, has universal appeal. Glasgow is Scotland’s premier shopping city with a diversity of boutiques, lively centres and designer retailers. Added to this, a huge variety of relaxing, sophisticated and lively restaurants and brasseries present top-class Scottish and international cuisine.

Glasgow’s museums and art galleries are world-renowned, and the vast majority are free to visit. The famous Burrell Collection showcases over 8,000 exhibits donated by Sir William Burrell to Glasgow, while the art gallery and museum, Kelvingrove, houses the finest civic collection of British and European paintings in this country. Mackintosh aficionados will particularly enjoy the Hunterian Art Gallery in the University of Glasgow, which includes a permanent reconstruction of his house. There are also over 20 private galleries in Glasgow, displaying a continuously changing programme of exhibitions highlighting the fines contemporary art.

Some interesting places to visit in Glasgow are: Glasgow Cathedral, which is one of few Scottish mediaeval churches to survive with its tower intact. Provand’s Lordship is the only house in the city to survive from Medieval times, and has been restored to give a real flavour of life in medieval Glasgow. The People’s Palace is Glasgow’s social history museum and tells the story of the people and the city. Inside you can see paintings, prints and photographs displayed alongside a wealth of historic artefacts, film and computer interactives. Merchant City, City Chambers, Glasgow School of Art. The Glasgow International Jazz Festival, and the World Pipe Band Championships.
