The name Motherwell is thought to have originated from the ancient “Lady Well” in the town or perhaps evolved form the Gaelic meaning “the level place above water”. Up until the 18th century the main occupation in the area was agriculture, then the establishment of iron and steel industries led to a rapid growth in population and prosperity. Today Motherwell District is a balance of urban and rural areas. The District boasts an excellent range of leisure facilities and amenities and is a host to a superb variety of major events, including a Summer Flower Festival, a Music Festival and a Beer Festival.
Nearby attractions include, Dalzell Country Park, which has pleasant walks and one of the most varied tree collections in Scotland. The Aquatec is a superb ice and leisure pool complex with conditioning room and health suite. Shotts Heritage Centre illustrates the history of the area from the 17th Century Covenanting period through to the present day. Strathclyde Country Park is a leading centre for watersports and outdoor recreation; the park also boasts Ranger service, Watersports Centre, Roman excavations and Hamilton Mausoleum. Motherwell Concert Hall and Theatre hosts a wide variety of festivals, concerts and conferences. RSPB Barons Haugh Nature Reserve hosts a wealth of birdlife, which can be viewed at this peaceful reserve. Shotts leisure Centre is a fun featured pool with kiddies lagoon and leisure facilities.
