Nestling comfortably in the valley of the River Avon lies the pleasant market town of Strathaven. With its roots in farming and weaving, the town has a long and proud history gaining its character as a Burgh of Barony in 1450. The focal point of the town is the Common Green where markets were once held. Today the town has a fascinating mix of inns, coffee houses and old shops, including Gilmour’s sweet shop, which is home of the famous Strathaven toffee.
Nearby attractions include, Strathaven castle, which dates from the 15th century, East Church, built in 1777 and is one of the town’s landmarks. Drumclog Monument to the west of the town marks the site of the Battle of Drumclog. The John Hastie Museum is a local history museum containing displays of weaving and ceramics, together with relics from Covenanting times and the Radical Rising of 1820. Strathaven Park makes for a great family day out, with a boating pond, miniature railway, bowling and putting green, and much more.
