Known as the Queen of the Cotswolds, Painswick is genteel, dignified and beautifully turned out, just as its original landowners would have wished.
Terraced gardens, rambling roses, elaborate gables and wrought iron gates are all features of the Painswick townscape.
Even today, wandering amongst the winding streets, youŽll find a wealth of cultural and artistic endeavour. Painswick is a haven for lovers of antiques, crafts, paintings, sumptuous meals and even simple cream teas.
Throughout August every year the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen holds an exhibition of textiles, furniture, glass and other items which all demonstrate the superb craftsmanship for which this area is so famous.
Like so many other towns in the area, Painswick was symbolic of the success of the textile industry. Hard-pressed dyers, spinners and machine hands toiled day and night throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, making tough woollen cloth for the British gentry and the army.
The mill owners invested their profits in beautiful town houses of striking design, turning Painswick into an architectural gem.
The impoverished mill workers of Painswick were maybe not so badly off since, afterall, they were surrounded by the lush rolling hills, woods and heaths of this wonderful part of Gloucestershire.
