Warwick is a delightful town steeped in history and well worth exploring.
It is perhaps best known for its magnificent castle, regarded as the finest mediaeval castle in England, UK. A visit to Warwick Castle really is a great day out for all the family.
Warwick has many other buildings of historic interest, however. Although the town was ravaged by the Great Fire in 1694, some important mediaeval buildings survived.
The Lord Leycester Hospital is housed in a delightful group of timber-framed buildings dating from the late 14th Century. There is also a Walled Garden, a treat for garden enthusiasts and artists alike. And why not visit the Collegiate Church of St Mary“s, where the powerful Earls of Warwick lie entombed in gilded splendour in the Beauchamp Chapel?
In Warwick“s market square, a 17th Century Market Hall houses displays of Warwickshire geology, biology and history. Here you can learn all about the Great Fire of Warwick.
St John“s House - an early Jacobean house and a museum of Warwickshire social history - is just a short walk from the centre of Warwick. There“s also the Doll Museum which is perfectly located in a picturesque 15th century house.
It is a true pleasure to wander around the streets of Warwick, browsing the various attractions and the large selection of antique, china and gift shops. There is also a wide variety of small specialised shops located around the Market Square, Swan Street and Smith Street and a good selection of pubs, fine restaurants and tearooms.
