Kintyre

Kintyre is a little known and unique peninsula in the S.W. corner of Scotland. Forty miles long and 8 miles wide, it has an amazing 80 miles of superb beaches. The “Secret Garden of Kintyre” is one of the sunniest and driest areas on the west coast of mainland Britain. The influence of the Gulf Stream means gardens here are full of exotic plants. Bypassed by tourist routes Kintyre retains a natural beauty, character and peace, with an overwhelming variety of Highland, Lowland and Hebridean scenery.

The East coast road meanders over heather hills, through lush glens and forests, by sandy shores and rocky headlands, with constant panoramic views of Kilbrannan Sound and the peaks of Arran. The Highland beauty of West Loch Tarbert gives rise to its claim as Scotland’s most beautiful loch, whilst a visit to Gigha brings a true Hebridean experience. In contrast to the east coast, the open west coast is rugged and exciting with raised beaches, glorious sands, crashing surf and the blue Atlantic Ocean.

The sparse human population and lack of development means that wildlife abounds in an unspoilt environment. Many rocky shores have colonies of grey and common seals, often very near the road. Otters are common but elusive. Special species of deer occur in large numbers and there are herds of wild goats. Hawks often use the telegraph poles as a vantage point. Golden Eagles and other birds of prey breed locally. Over 200 bird species have been recorded, and Kintyre is on an important sea bird migration route. Wild flowers occur in profusion particularly bluebells, primroses and orchids in spring and heather in summer. There are alpine and maritime plant rarities also. Mycologists and entomologists don’t know which way to turn!

Many visitors spend their entire holiday engrossed in their favourite hobby. Kintyre has five golf courses including the superb championship course at Machrihanish, with its infamous first hole overlooking the bay. Kintyre is also renowned as one of the best areas in Britain for windsurfing. Sea, loch and salmon river fishing are all available. The area is a paradise for walkers, with shore lines, hills and forests to explore.
