Mid Argyll

Near Lochgilphead, on the flat expanse of Moine Mhor or Big Moss, stand a massive bare rock, known as Dunadd. An air of mystery envelops the rock and its surroundings – with good reason. This is the birth place of Scotland, where the first Scot immigrants from Ireland established a foothold in the land of the picts. Here they first used the Stone of Destiny in their ceremonies, and named the place Dalriada. In time Scotland grew to occupy the whole of Northern Britain, but Dunadd still retains its ancient and timeless mystery surrounded by the natural beauty of the lochs, mountains, forests and islands – The true “Spirit of Scotland”.

Mid Argyll is loosely bounded by inveraray in the North, Talbert in the South, the shores of Loch Fyne to the East and Ardfern in the West. Explore at your leisure the fascinating legacy of medieval castles, chambered cairns, standing stones and hill forts. Discover ancient “cup and ring” marks, iron age rock carvings, early Christian crosses, once witness to Viking raids, Jacobite risings and highland clearances, now peaceful, unspoilt and stunningly beautiful.

Although steeped in history, Mid Argyll can provide something for everyone. Warm highland hospitality, comfortable and luxurious accommodation, gourmet menus using local produce, and a wealth of sports, activities and entertainments.

The warm climate promotes ideal conditions for several spectacular gardens with unusual and exotic plants, the 18th century Crinan Canal offers opportunities for walking and boating, Mid Argyll golf courses present a challenging game, and walks through the many forests and woodlands provide the visitor with an opportunity to spot the abundant flora and wildlife native to Scotland. Sea and loch sailing is reputed to be some of the best in Scotland as are the pony trekking and trail riding. Mountain bikes and hill walking, water sports and fishing, heritage centres and museums all make for an enjoyable and memorable holiday that you will want to repeat again and again.
