Claughton means "Farmstead near a hill". The village church St. Chad’s existed in 1100. Carved over the doorway of the church is the coat of arms of one of the ruling families, the Crofts, dated 1626.
Some of the oldest dated bells are found here. One or two may be older, but this is the first one to tell us its age exactly, with the date 1296. It was used for calling the men to prayer when Edward 1 was fighting the Scots, 18 years before Bannockburn.
Claughton is the smallest parish in Lancashire. Next to the church stands the remaining part of Claughton Hall, dating from the seventeenth century.
