Garstang is the gateway to some of the finest countryside in the North West with guided walks and way marked paths that run through beautiful woodland alongside winding rivers and the Lancaster Canal. Garstang is a small friendly market town steeped in history and is ideal for relaxed shopping trips, lazy picnics, tea shop treats and traditional pub lunches. Each Thursday the town is alive with the hustle of market day. Stretching the length of the high street and dating back to 1310 this traditional market still boasts over 70 stalls.
Unravel the history of the area with magnificent views overlooking the ruins of Greenhalgh Castle, which was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell in 1646 or explore the historic “weinds” (narrow alleyways) that provide an interesting and often unexpected diversion to hidden shops and café’s. For those with an interest in arts and crafts, look no further than the Garstang Arts Centre. Situated in the old grammar school it is always a hive of activity displaying work from local artists. Visitors can also enjoy the Garstang District Celebration of Arts in August, which is a week long programme of events and entertainment.
The Lancaster Canal is always a popular venue for either lazy walks along the towpath or a leisurely sail on a canal boat. Along the canalway there are pretty marinas and hostelries including Guy’s Thatched Hamlet, which is famous for its canalside restaurant and Tavern. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the indoor leisure centre, swimming pool, crown green bowling, canoeing, game and coarse fishing, and Garstang’s newly opened Country hotel and Golf Club with driving range. The discovery Centre in the High Street houses a walk through exhibition that illustrates the history and life of Garstang and the Wyre area.
