Preston’s colourful history has shaped today’s town. In 1179 Henry II granted Preston its Royal Charter and the right to hold a Guild Merchant. Since 1500 Guild Celebrations have been held every 20 years, with the most recent celebration in 1992 attracting millions of visitors.
Guild celebrations have involved colourful and exciting processions through the street as well as major spectacular outdoor events on Preston’s historic Flag Market and in its many beautiful parks. These include annual major outdoor events such as the Heineken Music Festival, the Annual Egg Rolling event, music events on Avenham Park as well as circuses and fun runs on Moor Park. The Flag Market annually hosts the Pot Fair, Town Criers Competition and Historical Fayre, attracting many thousands of visitors.
The Royal Charter also signalled the start of an outdoor market in Preston, which has flourished to this day since Anglo-Saxon times. Visitors to Preston will enjoy the outdoor market and much more. The town’s main attraction is the magnificent Harris Museum & Art Gallery, a Greek Revival architecture building, housing a wonderful collection of art and sculpture as well as regular new and innovative exhibitions.

The university of central Lancashire is an important feature of Preston now attracting nearly 15,000 students and visitors in terms of entertainment. Preston is ideally located surrounded by breathtaking countryside such as the Ribble valley, rolling Lancashire hills and is within minutes of the spectacular countryside of Beacon Fell Country Park, Cuerden Valley and the Forest of Bowland, and further still is the magnificent Lake District.
