Welcome to Sunderland, the City-by-the-sea and a treasure trove of fun for all the family with miles of safe, sandy beaches, green countryside and a place with a fascinating history. Sunderland lies on the North East Coast just south of Newcastle and east of the Pennines and the historic city of Durham. It’s a great place to bring the kids for a day out or for a short break and there’s always something to do day or night – spring, summer, autumn or winter.
The City’s traditional industry of ship building, mining and glassmaking, although largely gone, live on through the visitor attractions which depict and celebrate their glorious past. And the people of Sunderland are among the most friendliest, most warm-hearted and humorous in the country.
You will be surprised at how much there is to do and see in Sunderland – for all ages and whatever the weather! Come rain or shine, there’s a host of modern indoor leisure facilities to enjoy – a sports complex and play area at the Seaburn Centre, ice-skating at Crowtree Leisure Centre and thrills and spills at Washington Aquamania. On top of that, there’s plenty of indoor entertainment and a variety of museums, historic houses, theatres and much more.
Sunderland is rightly famous for its spectacular special events - the International Airshow, Kite Festival and Houghton Feast to name but three. Long, safe, sandy beaches, rock pools, watersports, funfairs, amusements, ice-cream and candy floss…. Sunderland’s twin resorts of Seaburn and Roker have everything for a family fun day out. You can make sand castles, sail or surf through the breakers, fish, canoe or boogie board – and all under the watchful eyes of the life guards.
Away from the miles of golden beaches, the children can have all the fun of the exciting Seaburn Fun Park with its galloping horses, ghost train and the biggest dodgem and astroslide in the North East. Or Perhaps they can re-enact the past at the Pirates Play Park.
Meanwhile, for the older children and grown-ups, there’s crazy golf, putting, tennis, bowls, shops, a picturesque promenade to stroll along and, for peace and quiet Roker Park, with its colourful displays, traditional Victorian bandstand and boating lake. If the weather’s unkind, just a short walk away across the promenade lawns lies the Seaburn Centre, which has something for everyone, including the Smuggler’s Cave and Smuggler’s Den adventure play areas, exhibitions, shows and a cafeteria – and all under cover. At Seaburn and Roker, you can be sure their will never be a dull moment.
The Lambton Worm Garden play area is the home of Sunderland’s very own mythical monster and has everything to keep the kids happy. The Lambton Worm is said to have been fished from the River Wear and thrown into a well, emerging as a mighty monster which terrorised the countryside during the crusades long ago.
