St Nicolas Church in the village of Charlwood boasts some splendid 14th century murals depicting the story of St Margaret and the screen is thought to be one of the finest in Surrey.
Charlwood expanded and was highly productive during the medieval and Tudor periods, and was like many of the other local villages connected with the iron industry.
Many of the inhabitants turned their hand to farming when the industry declined in the 18th century. In the 1890s a race course was built at Gatwick Manor, and shortly before the war an aerodrome was erected next to it.
Today both sites are occupied by Gatwick International Airport. Gatwick Zoo covers 10 acres of land and is home to more then 1000 small mammals, birds and butterflies, as well as hundreds of unusual and interesting plants.
