Hastings was once one of the Cinque Ports and is now a popular holiday resort with a 3 mile promenade which is reached via the narrow streets of the old town with its half-timbered buildings.
Fishing boats can be found scattered on the shingle beach since the harbour silted up centuries ago. The Fisherman“s Museum contains the last lugger which was built in Hastings in 1909.
Other museums of interest in the town are the Museum of Local History and Hastings Museum.
It was at Hastings that William the Conqueror prepared for the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066 although the actual battle was fought 6 miles inland at the appropriately-named Battle. The Battle of Hastings was the last time England was successfully invaded and conquered by a foreign army.
The remains of a Norman Castle on the cliffs are a reminder of those long-distant times. Near to the castle are St Clements Caves which are worthy of a visit.
