The name of the village is derived from “bright spring or well“ and the Lord of the Manor in 1373 - Sir Baldwin de Bereford.
In the 14th century church the earliest example of existing gravestone inscriptions can be seen. The 18th century mansion of Brightwell Park was burnt down but the stable block was restored to a private residence.
