Chinnor is one of the largest villages in South Oxfordshire with a population of over 6,000. The village´s strategic position, on the edge of the Chilterns escarpment, made it an important site during the Civil war.
Much of the prosperity of the village in former times came from the Chinnor Cement and Lime Company, started in 1908. Production at the Chinnor Works ceased in January 1999 and the future of the site, now owned by Readimix Cement, is the subject of discussions and varied opinions.
St Andrew´s church in the centre of the village has one of the oldest rood screens in the country, some interesting brasses and important Thornhill paintings.
Chinnor Windmill is a unique six-footed post mill originally built in Chinnor some 200 years ago.
The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway has been providing steam hauled rides along the remaining three and a half miles of the old GWR Watlington branch since 1994 and now offers a wide range of attractions to both families and railway enthusiasts.
