Cuddesdon

Map
A small unspoilt village and nearby hamlet of Denton in the parish of Cuddesdon has over 20 listed buildings made, in the main, from the local Oxfordshire limestone.

All Saints´ Church was built about 1180 and had a number of alterations and additions up to 1896 when the present pulpit was added. The Bishops´ palace was originally built in 1670 but only the chapel remains. Bishop Samuel Wilberforce founded the theological college in 1853.

The college dominates the upper part of the village with its austere Gothic design. To the west of the main village is Denton with its imposing early 17th century manor house, Denton House. Stone-built stables and a dovecote are separated from the main house by Denton Lane and the garden walls are famous for the Gothic windows brought from Brasenose College and built into them in the 19th century.
