From Gurnard, you can watch the liners and large ships as they leave Southampton water and enter the Solent. The Solent is always awash with yachts and motor cruises as they travel to the many locations and safe havens scattered along the northern coast of the island. Gurnard is unique on the Isle of Wight. There is a community of small chalets and homes, which are huddled together, each jostling for a view of the sea. In most cases these are permanent homes and each is truly individual.
The main theme of the village is sailing. In front of the pub is a large, sloping green, which ensures that, however many people sit there; they all have a view of the beach. Kids will love crabbing, looking through the rock pools or skimming stones across the sea. If you are more adventurous, a coastal walk passes the chalets, leading on to the shelter of Thorness Bay – great for beachcombing, cockling, or just relaxing and looking out to the mainland.
