Pyrton

Map
Pyrton is a small village near Watlington. Records of Pyrton Hundred and parish of Pyrton Manor, with four sub-manors at Standhill, Clare, Golder, and Stonor show the parish was established before AD 887. The Domesday Book covers Pyrton Hundred in some detail and further mention is in the Hundred Rolls of 1273 and Mary´s Rent Rolls of 1385. (A summary of Pyrton´s history up to the 17th century is held in Watlington library).

Pyrton Manor (not open to the public) was rebuilt in Elizabethan times; it was once the home of Elizabeth Simeon, wife of John Hampden. He died nearby after the battle of Chalgrove Field in 1643. St Mary´s Church has some features dating back to AD 987. Standing in a rural graveyard it is renowned for its wild daffodils show in spring. Other features of this village include a Victorian-built village hall, a market garden and the footpaths of the Oxfordshire and Icknield Ways which cross it.
