Located on the northeast coast of the Isle of Wight, enjoying views across the Solent towards Portsmouth and the shipping lanes, Ryde has miles of golden sands. The town is the gateway to the eastern Isle, with the fast ferry link, hovercraft and car ferry, which comes into Fishbourne, just to the west. From Ryde, you can catch a bust to the Island’s principal towns, or take the train through to Brading, Lake, Sandown and Shanklin. A level walk along the esplanade will take you past the ice rink, ten-pin bowling centre, pitch and putt and children’s fairground.
There is also a tidal harbour and fantastic views. Keep walking and you will pass Appleby Tower and Puckpool Park, a great place for children to play and adults to relax. Ryde is the second largest town on the Island, shops are located in the High Street and Union Street and you will find most of the high street chains, as well as local, more unique shopping. There is also a wide variety of pubs, cafes and restaurants to enjoy.
As you walk down the High Street and Union Street, there is usually a large ship passing up the Solent on its way to Portsmouth or Southampton. A constant reminder that, on this beautiful Island, you are never far away from fantastic sea views. Built at the height of the Victorian era, the pier at Ryde is where many visitors first set foot on the Island. With Ryde sloping up from the sea, it is easy to pick out the large Victorian properties, which were originally built for the gentry.
