A large village beside the Thames in the southern tip of the district, Lower Shiplake boasts a long, attractive river frontage with a lock and plenty of walking and boating activity. In August it shares the regatta with Wargrave across the water.
The Church at Shiplake Cross dates from the 12th century, has some medieval French glass and was the setting for the poet Tennyson´s marriage in 1850. He spent his pre-wedding night in the nearby old vicarage.
Close to the church is Shiplake Court, built in 1889 on the site of a much older house, which since the late 1950´s has been a boys´ school.
