Shirburn, in South Oxfordshire, has a 14th century castle, an excellent example of its kind, which is still used, as a private dwelling.

The occupants are descendants of Thomas Parker, Earl of Macclesfield, who came to Shirburn in 1716 and proceeded to make the original building with its moat, corner towers and drawbridge, more habitable.

Shirburn Church lost most of its Norman features when remodelled during the 19th century, at which time previously walled-up lepers“ window was discovered. Shirburn Castle is now a private residence and not open to the public.
