Stoke Row, lies in the deep beech woods of the South Oxfordshire Chiltern Hills, and a settlement dates back to Saxon times.
A population of approximately 700 lies within a compact village, with a large village green, part of a conservation area. It served to employ people using the beech to produce tent pegs and chair leg making ´bodging´. Clay was also abundant to produce bricks. A famous landmark is the ´Maharajah´s Well´ built in 1864, and given by the Maharajah of Benares as a thank you for work carried out in India by a local villager Mr E A Reade. The Duke of Edinburgh attended its centenary celebration; the well being surrounded by a well orchard and a private cottage with a small garden. A full history is available in the village shop opposite.
The village has also recently built a new sports pavilion overlooking the recreation ground, with beautiful views into the forests and farmland.
