Ventnor is the southern most resort on the Isle of Wight. The town was built up in the Victorian era and sits on the side of St Boniface Down. The Down offers shelter to the town, which takes full advantage of the Gulf Stream running up the English Channel. Ventnor has a botanical garden where you will find many varieties of plants, which only grow in the towns sheltered climate.
Being built on the side of the Downs, there is always a sea view and the large Victorian houses offer insight into what the town was like in its Victorian hay day. Much money is being spent on the area, which now boasts a small harbour. The sea at Ventnor is clear and the sand and shingle beach, slopes gently to the waters edge. Superb pubs overlook the beach area, and cafés offer locally caught seafood.
From the esplanade, you can walk to the town’s shops, past the cascade and winter gardens, or take the level walk through Bonchurch. If you decide to head further south, you can walk along the cliff tops towards Steephill Cove, a beautiful sheltered bay that can only be accessed on foot. This is a great place for children to play and enjoy safe bathing.
The town centre offers a wide range of knick-knack and speciality shops, which sell books and antiques, along with many other interesting items. Ventnor offers every kind of accommodation, from self-catering to quality hotels. The town has something for all the family and it is certainly worth a trip to take in the sea views and rugged coast line.
