The historic harbour town of Kirkcudbright, once famed as an artists’ colony, offers a wide variety of attractions. Taking advantage of the free parking will allow you to stroll through the bustle of the working harbour. The artists’ influence is immediately observed with the Harbour Gallery, which provides a varied programme of exhibitions throughout the year.
Along the High Street, which was once the centre of the artists’ colony, you will pass picturesque closes and Broughton House, which is the former home of the artist E. A. Hornel. At the far end of the High Street is the recently renovated Tolbooth. This old building was once a prison, which held John Paul Jones, the infamous pirate and founder of the American Navy. It is now an arts centre where visitors can trace the artistic history of Kirkcudbright.
Other attractions include: McLellans Castle which overlooks a wide selection of traditional shops, Museum, Hydro-electric Power Station with a visitors’ centre, coastal walks, sea fishing, wildlife park, 18-hole golf course, bowling green, tennis court, caravan park and nearby beaches.
