At the meeting of three rivers and overshadowed by hills, Langholm built its history on the woollen trade. It is a typical border town, with long narrow streets and granite-stoned buildings. On Whita Hill, with its magnificent views, lies a sculpture commemorating Langholm’s famous son, the poet and novelist Hugh McDiarmid. The town is also the birthplace of the great engineer Thomas Telford. Langholm is a relaxing base for fishing and hill walking.
To the north of Langholm is Hermitage Castle; this 13th century castle has a vivid and cruel history. Mary, Queen of Scots risked her life when she visited Bothwell here in 1566. The castle is a popular tourist attraction and is said to be haunted, screams from the victims of Lord Soulis can sometimes be heard, and it’s said that the ghost of Alexander Ramsey has also been seen.
