Largs offers you so many pleasures, its been named Scotland’s top tourism town – first by readers of the Herald, and then by the paper’s own panel of judges. The new Vikingar experience, Barrfields Pavilion Theatre and Swimming Pool. The upgraded promenade and illuminations. The National Sports Centre’s state-of-the-art facilities now open to all visitors. The animal kingdom at Blackshaw Farm Park. And the exotic “Secret Forest” – Kelburn Country Centre’s and most unusual attraction. At the same time Largs Yacht Haven’s ever-expanding sailing facilities attract more boats every year to take advantage of the best sailing waters in Europe.
No place could have a better setting. The green hills that rise behind Largs are now part of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park and provide spectacular walks and breathtaking views overlooking the islands of the Firth of Clyde. The Vikings came here in 1263 and the famous battle of Largs they fought and lost is remembered throughout the year at Vikingar and is also celebrated annually at the end of august and beginning of September during the Largs Viking Festival. Another celebration in July is the annual Brisbane Queen festival that has street parades and family events.
Largs is now an elegant resort with a beautiful promenade, lively restaurants, cafés, bars, and some of the best shopping in the West of Scotland. Nardini’s restaurant and ice cream are renowned worldwide and customers can also enjoy Nardini’s unique service at the Regattas restaurant within Largs Yacht Haven.
Some of the main local and nearby attractions include: Kelburn Castle and Country Centre, where you can visit the historic gardens, explore the romantic glen with its magnificent waterfalls and in July and August take a guided tour around the castle itself. Blackshaw Farm Park is a family-owned working hill farm open to the public from one end of March to the end of October. You can see seasonal daily demonstrations of such activities as lambing, shearing and dipping sheep, and milking the cows, and the young ones can hold the smaller animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and lambs. Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park surrounds Largs and is one of Scotland’s four regional parks, with over 100 square miles of beautiful countryside, including moorland, farmland, glens and lochs. Visitors may also see various species of birds and an abundance of plants and animals. The woods are home to roe deer and on the moors you may see buzzards soaring. Visitors go to the park to go walking, fishing, sailing or canoeing, or to just enjoy a picnic. With this and plenty more to do and see, Largs will make an ideal holiday destination for anyone.
