Loch Ken is an area of great natural beauty set in the Glenkens, and is one of the most scenic and unspoilt parts of Galloway. Loch Ken has the designation of a Regional Scenic Area and is part of an Environmentally Sensitive Area (E.S.A.). Things to see and do at Loch Ken include birdwatching, water skiing, sailing, fishing and you can simply enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside.

Loch Ken is the most important established water skiing centre in southern Scotland attracting many visitors, with their own boats, from all over Scotland and Northern England. The activities of windsurfing, dinghy, sailing, rowing and canoeing have become increasingly popular and this is reflected on the growing range of facilities available at Loch Ken. Loch Ken Holiday Park near Parton provides caravan and camping facilities on the loch side.

The last two decades have seen a tremendous growth in coarse fishing and Loch Ken has a good reputation among anglers, particularly on account of the pike, roach and perch that have been caught here. Catches in recent years seem to indicate an increase in the size of fish being taken. Golf is one of the most popular recreational activities in this part of Scotland. There is a nine-hole course in castle Douglas and a club at New Galloway at the north end of Loch Ken. It also has 9 holes and offers superb scenic views of both the loch and surrounding countryside.

No holiday at Loch Ken would be complete without enjoying one of the district’s country walks. A section of the 212 mile Southern Upload runs north of the area and includes some of the south west Scotland’s finest scenery. Loch Ken is of quite extraordinary richness and attraction to wildlife, containing a variety of important habitat types, including open water, marsh and fen, water meadows, willow carr, reed beds, and broadleaved woodlands. It is especially noticeable for its wildfowl in particular the wintering flock of Greenland white-fronted geese.
