At the heart of the Scottish Borders, nestling between the River Tweed and the triple Eildon Hills, lies the attractive town of Melrose. Adding to the wealth of historic interest are individual, specialist shops to browse around, whilst country pursuits are close at hand. Melrose provides an excellent place for exploring more of the region, with a range of accommodation available – hotels, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, self-catering and a caravan and camping park.
Melrose Abbey was founded by King David I in 1136. It grew rich and powerful but over the centuries it suffered repeated English harassment, with 1545 marking its end as a monastic house. The red sandstone ruins show some of the finest stonework in Scotland, including on the roof that of a pig playing bagpipes. The heart of Robert The Bruce was buried within the Abbey.
Some of the activities on offer are, fishing on the famous River Tweed, golf at Melrose Golf Course, which has 9 holes and is set on a hillside, walking, choose form a town trail, country walk or the long-distance Southern Upland Way, riding at nearby Earlston offers the chance to see the countryside from horseback. Tennis, bowls and putting is available in the Gibson Park. There is also an indoor swimming pool at Galashiels, which is 4 miles from Melrose.
