One of the most beautiful villages in Scotland, New Abbey is only 8 miles south of Dumfries. There is plenty to see and do here. For the more energetic, there is a walk to the top of the Waterloo Monument, which overlooks the village, or even Criffel itself. Shambellie House, Museum of Costume New Abbey lets visitors see historic costumes of 1860 to 1940 within period room settings of country house set in wooded grounds.

The mill lade and pond can also be seen and picnic tables are available at the mill. Sweetheart Abbey is a splendid ruin of the late 13th and early 14th-century Cistercian abbey founded by Devorgilla in memory of her husband John Balliol. When her husband died Devorgilla had his heart embalmed and placed in a silver casket. When she died it was buried with her in the abbey.
