The Ancient Royal Burgh of Selkirk, standing high above the Ettrick and Yarrow Valley’s, was once famous for its shoemakers, with local inhabitants being known as “Souters”. Over 2,000 pairs of shoes were supplied in 1745 to Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army. Sir Walter Scott served as Sheriff of Selkirk for 32 years. A statue of him stands in the Market Place and his former courtroom re-opened in 1994 tells the story of Scott’s associations with the area and its people.

The towns oldest dwelling, Halliwell’s House has been restored as a local museum, with the buildings links with the ironmongery trade recreated, and the Robson Gallery providing a venue for changing exhibitions. Clapperton’s Daylight Photographic studio is a working Museum and photographic archive, which has occupied the same building since 1867. Three miles west of Selkirk is Bowhill House, a Georgian mansion with a world-renowned art collection, Victorian Kitchen, Adventure Playground and woodland walks little theatre.

The Common Riding held in June is traditionally recognised as the oldest in the borders, with ceremony which has been re-enacted for over 450 years, drawing on a tradition from Flodden where 80 local men left for war and only one returned. The industrial background is reflected in the number of specialist tweed outlets, whilst local glassworks offer the chance to see skilled craftsmen at work.

To the north is Abbotsford house, which was built and lived in by Sir Walter Scott. The house contains a fantastic collection of relics, including an impressive collection of weapons and armour, Rob Roy’s gun and Montrose’s sword, and over 9,000 rare volumes in his library. Visitors will be able to see Sir Walter Scott’s study, library, drawing room, entrance hall and armouries, as well as the dining room overlooking the Tweed, which is where Sir Walter died.
